Percy Jackson & The Olympians – A Harry Potter Rewrite? | Book Equals

via Percy Jackson & The Olympians – A Harry Potter Rewrite? | Book Equals.

Call me an idiot, but why are people trying to assume that Percy Jackson & The Olympians is a Harry Potter Rewrite? To me, that’s the most absurd thing I’ve heard, not to mention that I’m still trying to fight against Twilight haters and people who think Charlie Bone is a rip-off of Harry Potter.

In short, I don’t have time for this.

But what I do have time for is to remind people to stop comparing every piece of fantasy they see to Harry Potter. Harry Potter is NOT the be-all of fantasy. If you want some real fantasy, why not try the Lord of the Rings or the Chronicles of Narnia? Why not find some classic fantasy? Heck, why not pick up anything written by Neil Gaiman for that matter?

Harry Potter is NOT the greatest fantasy story in existence. Far from it. In fact, we should be saying “Harry who? I’m so over that!

Anyway, to get back on topic, the reason is that Percy Jackson draws heavily on Greek mythology, but Harry Potter? Well, not so much. You think you know a book, but where the source of the story comes from is just as important as the story itself.

Now you know.

Does it really matter that Harry Potter and Percy Jackson are alike?

According to us, it does.

Here’s why:

  • Percy goes to Camp Half-Blood while Harry Potter goes to Hogwarts
  • Harry is a wizard while Percy is a demigod.
  • Plus, their life journeys are different; Percy is among those who could save the world or destroy it, and Harry has to defeat some evil wizard or the wizarding world is doomed.

I could stop there (and I should), but it doesn’t seem to matter because according to the other bloggers, Harry Potter just can’t hold a candle to Percy Jackson’s lantern.

Plus, in the words of Percy Jackson himself: I’m so much better, so Potter, you can’t sue!

Another debate over Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, but while Percy may have some Harry Potter undertones, he’s nothing like Harry at all.

First off, Percy Jackson deals with the Greek gods while Harry Potter is more about magic. Second, the movie is nothing like the Hary Potter movies. Third, adults (like me) have read the Percy Jackson books and enjoyed them.

So to answer the question, no the Percy Jackson books aren’t even a rip-off of Harry Potter. So there you have it.

As we all know, there is an alternative story out there for all those who want something to think about other than Harry Potter.

And here is the story:

Percy Jackson is a boy who has some troubling issues, such as ADHD and dyslexia. But he never expected to see his math teacher turn into a monster and almost kill him.

And then something exciting happens.

He finds out that far from being a regular kid who has ADHD and dyslexia, he is a son of the sea god Poseidon. In short, he is a demigod.

Percy then ends up in a place called Camp Half-Blood, a sanctuary for other demigods like him. He makes new friends and goes on epic quests. The first book (and movie) is what happens when someone (I won’t name names, but they know who they are!) steals Zeus’s lightning bolt and Percy sets off to retrieve it. The second book (and movie) is what happens when he and a few companions set off to retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Sea of Monsters (a.k.a. The Bermuda Triangle)

And the thing about this story is, though, is that Percy Jackson is not a harry potter look alike. In fact, it’s not even emulating Harry Potter at all. Percy Jackson and the Olympians (and the sequel Heroes of Olympus) is all about the Greek gods and Greek mythology, which is something that you Potter-loving freaks just don’t understand.

My advice: set aside Harry Potter and hop on the Percy Jackson Express. That is all.
